Our previous blog post listed five companies that strike a great balance between quality and price in their t-shirts. However, if you are looking for superior fabric and craftsmanship, those brands might underwhelm you. That’s not the case with the brands below.
We’re talking about high-level sewing techniques, patterns, and fibers. Their shirts might look basic, but if you take a closer look, you'll see they are anything but.
The List
1. UES Ramayana Crew-Neck Pocket T-Shirt
Price: USD 70
Materials: 100% Suvin Gold Cotton
What is great:
The Ramayana series uses Suvin Gold cotton, one of the best available in the world. The shirts are made using old-style shuttle looms and traditional dyes that give them a more artisanal look.
What is meh:
The only problem is that it is very hard to find them available on their website or in other retailers.
2. Merz B. Schwanen 214 Loopwheeled T-Shirt
Price: USD 88
Materials: 100% Organic 2-Thread Cotton
What is great:
The brand has exploded in the past few years, and their quality should need no introduction. This model has special details such as a paneled neck ribbon with a wide diagonal structure and a triangle insert under the arms. The fit is a bit relaxed but still very flattering.
What is meh:
It is not as soft as some people would think for a mid-weight shirt at 245g/sqm.
3. Studio D'Artisan Suvin Gold Loopwheeled T-Shirt
Price: USD 135
Materials: 100% Suvin Gold Cotton
What is great:
Knitted on an old loopwheel machine that can only knit for half a day, this shirt uses the same incredible cotton as the UES shirt, but the construction is on a different level. Not only is it heavier, but the exterior is tough and sturdy, while the interior feels quite soft.
What is meh:
Well, the price. You can get 80% of what it delivers for 60% of the price elsewhere.
Final Thoughts
For most of us, the t-shirts and brands listed above are not for daily use. They are for those special occasions when you want to look smart and feel good without having to dress up.
You can find more expensive options out there, but we feel that over $100 the law of diminishing returns starts playing a role and you really don't get much more for a higher price.
